On Simulations of Discrete Fracture Network Flows with an Optimization-Based Extended Finite Element Method

چکیده
Following the approach introduced in [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 35 (2013), pp. B487– B510], we consider the formulation of the problem of fluid flow in a system of fractures as a PDE constrained optimization problem, with discretization performed using suitable extended finite elements; the method allows independent meshes on each fracture, thus completely circumventing meshing problems usually related to the discrete fracture network (DFN) approach. The application of the method to DFNs of medium complexity is fully analyzed here, accounting for several issues related to viable and reliable implementations of the method in complex problems.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Rock Dynamic Fracture
Rapid development of engineering activities expands through a variety of rock engineering processes such as drilling, blasting, mining and mineral processing. These activities require rock dynamic fracture mechanics method to characterize the rock behavior. Dynamic fracture toughness is an important parameter for the analysis of engineering structures under dynamic loading. Several experimental...

Various structural discontinuities, which form a discrete fracture network, play a significant role in the failure conditions and stability of the rock masses around underground excavations. Several continuum numerical methods have been used to study the stability of underground excavations in jointed rock masses but only few of them can take into account the influence of the pre-existing natur...
متن کاملEstimation of Fracture path in the Structures and the Influences of Non-singular term on crack propagation
In the present research, a fully Automatic crack propagation as one of the most complicated issues in fracture mechanics is studied whether there is an inclusion or no inclusion in the structures. In this study The Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) is utilized because of several drawbacks in standard finite element method in crack propagation modeling. Estimated Crack paths are obtained by ...
متن کاملBack-calculation of mechanical parameters of shell and balls materials from discrete element method simulations
Discrete Element Method (DEM) is extensively used for mathematical modeling and simulating the behavior of discrete discs and discrete spheres in two and three dimensional space, respectively. Prediction of particles flow regime, power draw and kinetic energy for a laboratory or an industrial mill is possible by DEM simulation. In this article, a new approach was used to assess the main paramet...
متن کاملDiscrete element modeling of explosion-induced fracture extension in jointed rock masses
The explosion process of explosives in a borehole applies a very high pressure on its surrounding rock media. This process can initiate and propagate rock fractures, and finally, may result in the rock fragmentation. Rock fragmentation is mainly caused by the propagation of inherent pre-existing fractures of the rock mass and also from the extension of the newly formed cracks within the intact ...
